Can a diet full of sugar and processed fat and Type 2 diabetes cause degeneration of intervertebral discs in the back? If so, what's occurring, and can it be prevented?
Researchers on the job guess the diet related to Type 2 diabetes – one high in sugars and processed fats – causes change and inflammation of disk tissue, triggering a chain of reactions, which results in degeneration. Research indicates that the diet full of heat-processed foods, including foods that are fried, plays a part in AGE formation. Research also suggests structural deterioration is caused by the accumulation of AGEs, raises inflammation that may result in disk degeneration, and leads to your host of degenerative diseases including diabetes, atherosclerosis, and Alzheimer's.

To distinguish the systemic effects AGEs may have on the body from localized effects in particular tissues, researchers will even look at disc tissue and spinal bone in vitro. Because research, bone and disc tissue from both standard and AGE "knockout" mice fed on a routine diet will be bathed in a high AGE medium, hastening the exposure of these particular tissues to AGEs. Tissue samples that are chosen will be exposed to your drug which could not be unable to obstruct AGEs in disk tissue, restricting exposure to disk and bone tissue. A specialist in extracellular bone matrix, Vashishth, has a long term interest in investigating AGE-accumulation in bone. With his expertise, the team will even look at changes in bone could be leading to the degeneration of disks.
