87eleven Serenity previz

87eleven is without a doubt the hollywood reference in action design. From the Matrix movies, to Serenity, to 300 and yes, the Bourne Ultimatum, they tweak the choregraphy, suggest shots, and offer a rough cut for all the memorable set action pieces in nearly all the big action blockbusters of every summer. Here, pulled from their main site, is the previz they did for the River bar sequence. It’s weird to watch something with such low production values, almost like an amateur film, but with top tier choregraphers and stuntsmen (and women ^^.) It’s the equivalent of having Laurence Olivier giving his all but shot on a Hi-8.

(For all of you who do not know what previz is, it’s a lo-fi/rough version of a sequence, sometimes the whole movie, shot and edited for the director as a blueprint for what will end up on the screen. The three strengths of previz : extremely creative, very fast and cheap = if you need to change the choregraphy of a fight or the geography of a scene, no need to rebuild the whole set, or redo every fx shot, do the change in previz over a day and send the video to the fx/animation/second unit crew.)

go to the 87eleven website to see their demo, and other previz reels.

Badass.
